Adverse Credit Cards

  Adverse Credit Cards

Adverse credit cards afford an opportunity for credit card holders with a bad credit rating to improve their future credit rating.

Lots of people get into debt, including credit card debt, for all sorts of reasons. Some incur debt through loss of employment, loss of business income, illness, unforeseen expenses or an inability to curb their spending. The main reason is income failing to keep up with expenditure. They are then unable to meet their financial commitments. Payments are missed and the arrears pile up. Their creditors report each missed payment to Credit Reference Agencies such as Equifax and Experian. These Credit Reference Agencies hold records of the financial history of every individual in the UK. Missed payments on mortgages, secured and personal loans are also recorded. As a result these people are perceived as a credit risk. Because they are considered a credit risk they are unable to obtain credit. People who have gone through a difficult financial period due to loss of unemployment or illness may have now found themselves in employment or have returned to work following an illness and are earning a decent income. They now want to obtain a credit card but due to their credit history they might find it hard to do so.

Against this background credit card companies, in order to encourage credit card holders to repair their credit rating, came up with adverse credit cards. These credit cards are designed for people with an adverse credit history. Typically these credit cards are offered with a small credit limit but with a high APR. This is to reflect the risk undertaken by the credit card issuer. Nevertheless, this does afford the credit card holder the opportunity to work towards building up a good credit history. After a period of say one year, the credit card company if satisfied by the way the credit card holder has conducted his credit card payments, may well offer an increased credit limit with a more competitive APR.
